Nine percent of all drivers 15 to 19 years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crashes. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted at the time of the crashes.

Driver's Ed

Hi everyone! I would really like to bring something important to everybody's attention. Today I had my first day of Driver's Ed. I started with a theory class and then moved onto driving. In my theory class we spent a majority of the time talking about crashes. (Probably to scare us into safe driving.) Many of the crashes were caused by drunk driving and texting while driving--meaning each of these accidents could have been prevented. While in the car, I found myself nervous to even glance at the mirrors, because I did not want to take my eyes off of the road. As I returned to the back seat when my turn was over, I thought about how difficult it might be to text and drive, based on the fact that I hardly wanted to take my hands off the wheel to push hair out of my face. Driving takes A LOT of attention and it is easy to make mistakes, so all of your focus should be on the road and NOT on your phone. There are new and nervous drivers on the road as well who should not have to suffer any consequences from a mistake another driver made. Stay safe and off your phones!! (Tell your kids :))

Hi everyone! Long time no post!
Anyway, I wanted to bring to light the fact that there are a lot of students in town, including myself, who are starting their driving education. As I, and maybe some of your kids, start this process, it is important to keep in mind that while exciting and new, driving can also be dangerous. Make sure you tell your kids, nieces, nephews, or friends that they must remember to keep their hands on the wheel and not their phones!

Snow day!

Snow days can be a lot of fun! As we take a look outside today, we can see that there is plenty of snow covering our streets, houses, and cars. If you are planning to hit the roads over the next few days, please make sure to sweep the ice and snow from the roof of your car; it's possible for the ice to slide off while you're driving and hit another car!! I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend!!

Hello everybody! Long time no post, sorry about that! 

I know that school is almost over (get excited for summer!), but….Parents!  It would be awesome if you could review bus safety precautions with your kids!  I was in the car with my mom the other day, and we were stopped at a stop sign on Sandy Court waiting for a school bus that was across the intersection facing us.  After the kids were done getting off the bus, the bus driver closed the door, pulled in the flashing "STOP!" sign, turned off the flashing lights, and started to pull away.  Since that usually means cars are allowed to move, we proceeded slowly past the bus and all of a sudden, a boy ran out from behind the bus right in front of our car!  Someone was waiting on the porch across the street.  Please remind your kids that they're supposed to cross the street IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL BUS.  This lets the bus driver see them, and they won't turn off the flashing lights or stop sign until all the children have safely crossed. Although we were only going a few miles per hour, that boy ran right into our path! Keep your kids safe please!

This PSA is done by Port Washington 9th grader Andrew Goldberg and stars his 8 year old brother Eric!  It's a good reminder for holiday driving and shows that kids can make a difference!  Great job guys!

Graphic but Amazing PSA

This video is something all parents should show their teens.  It's very graphic and not for the faint of heart!  (They are graphic recreations of accidents.)  People are always saying "if this doesn't stop distracted driving, nothing will," but this one really affected me.

Love the new signs!!

There's a great new trend going around Port! These signs are a good reminder to parents and others to drive carefully in areas where kids are outside because the kids may not be seen!! Maybe you'll spot one!

Wow!! We Received Citations from the Police Commissioners!

We were honored to receive citations from the Port Washington Police Department at the June Police Commissioners meeting for our work on our driver safety initiative.  It's nice for kids to be recognized by community leaders!  Here are three photos from the ceremony.  1) With Deputy Chief Robert Del Muro, Commissioner Angela Lawlor-Mullins, Commissioner James Duncan, Commissioner Dave Franklin and Deputy Chief Jeffrey Morris (missing from photo is Girl Scout Rebecca Muratore.)  2) Listening to Commissioner Franklin read a citation for our leader, Linda Nutter, and 3) reciting the Girl Scout Promise with Commissioner Lawlor-Mullins (a former Girl Scout!)

Harborfest 2014

Supervisor Bosworth attended the May 4th Momtreprenuer Fair and was interested in our campaign.  We're looking forward to working with her office to help spread the word throughout the Town of North Hempstead.
